Abstract

The cultural resources survey was conducted on 323 acres of road and timber sales areas around Gab Creek, tributary to Cochran Creek, in eastern Dawson County. This land is within the Chestatee District of the Chattahoochee National Forest. It is very steep and presently covered in mixed pines and hardwoods. Three sites were recorded in this area: the Cochran family cemetery, including a War of 1812 veteran; the Cochran house site; and a lithic scatter in a roadway through a saddle. The first is protected by State statute from road construction and logging disturbance, and the other two have been severely disturbed in the past by clearing and the road and warrant no further investigation. Clearance for the timber operations is recommended.
