Abstract

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service contracted with Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., to conduct a reconnaissance survey of areas surrounding the Okefenokee Swamp that may be disturbed by the construction of fire breaks and fire access roads. Four sites (two prehistoric lithic sites and two historic sites) were found and are considered potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places; seven artifact occurrences were also recorded. It is recommended that the sites be avoided by future construction and that resurvey of the areas be considered after the planned improvements are completed.
