Abstract

This report discusses the results of an archeological survey and historical literature search sponsored by the City of Savannah. The survey found a significant archeological deposit dating to between 1780 and 1820 buried beneath up to 2 m of mid-nineteenth century fill. The historical research has determined that many of the early owners of the property were shoe and boot makers or were associated with a nearby tannery. These craftsmen owned the property from 1787 to about 1828. This report concludes with a proposed data recovery program for mitigating the loss of this important cultural resource.
