Abstract

A cultural resources report was conducted in September, 1985, on 569 acres of National Forest land in northeast Greene County, Georgia, proposed for exchange with the Georgia Kraft Company. The location was in rolling hills between Town and Rush creeks in the Piedmont, and the surfaces had been heavily disturbed by recent logging activities conducted just before government acquisition of the land in 1977. Ten sites were found, all but two of which were badly disturbed by the log landings and logging roads. One site was an historic house which had been completely removed to Greensboro in a salvage operation in the mid-1940's. It was subsequently destroyed by fire. The remaining site is a cemetery which is protected by Georgia statutes from disturbance. Cultural resources clearance for the proposed exchange is recommended.
