Abstract

A Cultural resources survey was conducted in June, 1985P with follow-ups in January and March 1986. A total of 2724 acres of National Forest land were surveyed in Whitfield and Walker Counties, northwest Georgia which were designated an Off-Roads Vehicle (ORV) recreation area. The terrain was surveyed on foot, with shovel or post-hole testing for cultural remains. Twenty-one sites were found mostly in the valley areas, including two isolated burials a mine test pit an historic dump site, several house places and lithic scatters of local cherts. Further historic investigation is recommended and protection in place will be provided for the mine and the burials. With these recommendations there should be no effect on the cultural resources base of the area by the proposed use of this tract.
