Abstract

This cultural resources survey report covers 764 acres of Oconee National Forest land offered for exchange with two private land owners, Eugene Kelly and T.H. Resseau, Jr. It was in four parcels three of which are reported here; the other was reported in 1978. A total of eight sites were found in these three parcels, five historic sites (including a cemetery) and three prehistoric sites, ranging from Lithic (possibly Archaic) to early 20th Century farmhouses and related structures. Due to the heavy post-occupational disturbances, resulting from erosion, logging, road construction, and site clearance, none of the sites meet the 36 CFR 60 criteria for nomination to the National Register. Thus clearance for the proposed exchanges is recommended.
