Abstract

A cultural resources evaluation was made of the principal dwelling and outbuildings, and structural foundations at the Hitchiti Experimental Forest administrative/work center in northwest Jones County, Georgia, part of the Oconee National Forest. A 1938 residence was proposed for internal remodeling, and changes were planned for new buildings in locations containing poured concrete foundations from early 1940's work center buildings, which have since been covered or modified. The residence may be eligible for National Register nomination. Modifications planned include new electrical, plumbing and heating facilities which will not effect the external appearance of the building, and will preserve the historic internal features as much as possible. Clearance for the changes is recommended. The old work center building foundations were not considered significant, due to subsequent modifications, and clearance for their removal is recommended.
