Abstract

Resource Inventory I studies were conducted for the Langdale and Riverview Hydroelectric Generating projects (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission [FERC] Project Nos. 2341 and 2350, respectively) between December 1 and 31, 1987. primary goals of the inventory were threefold. The first was to document any previously recorded cultural properties within project study areas through review of relevant literature and previous research. Second, by on-site visit to the project areas, information was to be gathered on project configuration and project-specific environmental data (e.g., shoreline configuration, ground cover and surface conditions); and a reconnaissance made of any previously recorded cultural properties within project boundaries. The third was to develop prehistoric and historic cultural contexts for the project areas from current regional and local archaeological and historical research, including projections of the potential for the occurrence of previously unidentified cultural properties on project tracts.

This report begins with descriptions of the Langdale and Riverview Project Areas in Chapter II. Chapter III consists of a brief discussion of regional environmental context, and chapter IV is a review of literature and documentary sources utilized. A discussion of prehistoric and historic cultural contexts and the development of projections of the potential occurrence of prehistoric and historic cultural properties are presented in Chapters V and VI, respectively. Chapter VII summarizes the results of this study and provides recommendations for on-site cultural property inventory and assessment. The Bibliography includes all documentary sources researched, including those cited hereinafter. An additional Map Bibliography is also included. Appendix A consists of the resumes of project Principals.
