Abstract

Archaeological survey and testing of the 22.6 mile long (90 meters wide) proposed Wansley-Yates Railroad corridor, in Carroll and Coweta counties, Georgia, was conducted for Georgia Power Company. Background research included review of the state site files, and an examination of primary and secondary archival resources. Survey methods consisted of pedestrian walkover and screened shovel testing on a thirty meter interval along the entire right-of-way. Artifact finds were evaluated through additional short interval shovel testing and formal unit excavation, as necessary, to determine eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places [NRHP]. Twenty-one sites (including one previously recorded site) and eighteen isolated finds were encountered during the survey. Sites 9CL264 and 9CW98 were considered to possess high research potential for contributing to knowledge of Woodland Period settlement and lifeways in the western Georgia Piedmont and are recommended eligible to the NRHP. The other recorded sites and isolated finds are recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
