Abstract

This report addresses the results of an archeological reconnaissance survey of an 11.461 acre tract performed by New South Associates for the City of Euharlee, Bartow County, Georgia. Further development of this property is scheduled to take place with the assistance of Land and Water Conservation Funds provided by the State of Georgia. As the proposed recreation facility lies within the Etowah Valley National Register District, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Section, requested that a reconnaissance level study of the property be performed to determine the presence or potential for archeological resources. This reconnaissance failed to identify any cultural resources within the study limits, much of which have received prior disturbance due to the construction of two baseball fields. One potential archeological site, a possible prehistoric fish weir located in Euharlee Creek immediately adjacent to the recreation facility, was noted. As the proposed development consists of unobtrusive, low-profile, construction, this use is not considered to represent an adverse impact to the Etowah District. This report recommends that further development of the recreation facility site can occur without impacting significant archeological resources, provided that such development does not extend into the waters of Euharlee Creek in the area of the potential fish weir.
