Abstract

In order to comply with federal regulations governing the disposition of cultural resources (National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, Executive Order 11593, and the Archeological and Historic Preservation Act of 1974) the U.S. Army and Fort Gordon sponsored an intensive cultural resources survey of approximately 14.2 sq km (3500 acres). The cultural resources survey was undertaken because timber harvesting will take place in the near future. Timber harvesting has the potential for adversely impacting significant cultural resources. The survey was conducted during the late summer of 1990 by a four person team from Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. The acreage was distributed in two large parcels located in the northeast and southwest portions of Fort Gordon. Included within these two parcels are six different land management units (Training Areas 3, 4, 5, 46, 47, 48). A total of 157 prehistoric and historic cultural resources were recorded by the survey. This includes sites and isolated artifacts (occurrences). Twenty-seven cultural resources are recommended as eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. If the State Historic Preservation Officer concurs with this recommendation, the sites must be protected from timber harvesting, military maneuvers, construction, or other land disturbing activities. Due to past disturbance (cultivation, timber harvesting, erosion, etc.) and/or low artifact densities, none of the remaining cultural resources appear to have archeological or historical significance. They are recommended as being ineligible for listing on the National Register. No pre-military standing structures are located within the survey areas.
