Abstract

Cultural resources survey of Oglethorpe Power Corporation's proposed 3.0 acre Brays 46/25KV substation, in Washington County, Georgia, was conducted in October 1992 by Brockington and Associates, Inc. Goals of the project were the location and evaluation of all cultural resources which might be impacted by the construction, operation, and maintenance of this facility. Archaeological and historical research included of examination of relevant archival resources and field survey. Survey methods consisted of screened shovel testing, nonsystematic surface collection of the entire site area, and evaluation of visual impact to standing structures surrounding the project site. No significant (listed, eligible, or potentially eligible for the NRHP) cultural resources are present within the site boundaries. Three isolated historic artifacts were collected from the ground surface within the project area. No archaeological sites were recorded in the project area. The proposed substation is not located within the viewshed of any architecturally significant structures, therefore construction will have no adverse visual effect. Based on these findings the project area is recommended cleared for the proposed construction.
