Abstract

This report documents the results of the Phase I cultural resource survey of the proposed 400 acre Haig Mill Dam and Reservoir project area located to the north of Dalton, Whitfield County, Georgia. The cultural resources survey was conducted by Garrow & Associates, Inc., Atlanta, for Golder Associates, Inc., Atlanta. The survey focused on the identification and recordation of historic and prehistoric resources in the project area. A total of nine archaeological and historical sites and four isolated finds were recorded during the conduct of these investigations. Three of the sites contained historic components (early twentieth century through the present), three contained prehistoric components (undated), and three contained both historic (late nineteenth century through the present and late nineteenth century through early twentieth century) and prehistoric components (undated). Five of the sites (9WD42, 9WD43, 9WD45, 9WD46, and 9WD48) are recommended for Phase II testing to determine if they are potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
