Abstract

A cultural resources survey was conducted at Duke's Creek Recreation Area on Georgia Highway 348, White County, GA, in locations planned for development. The areas surveyed included the falls trail with new decks at the bottom; an old railway bed for the trail and for construction and handicap access; two buildings, septic tank and drain field; the knoll top; and two well locations, for a total of less than eight acres. Pedestrian survey with screened shovel tests revealed no significant cultural resources. The rail bed had been heavily modified in the past, so as not to be eligible for the National Register. Interpretation of rail logging was recommended for the finished trail, however. Cultural resources clearance for the proposed projects is recommended.
