Abstract

Following is the archaeology report on the subject project for your use. If it is necessary to make any changes in this report, please bring them to my attention. Unless otherwise notified, I will assume that the report is used exactly as provided. "In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, Project EDS-441(5), Laurens County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify, and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The proposed project would construct a multi-lane roadway from US 441/SR 31 south of Dublin to US 441/SR 29 north of Dublin. The project begins at US 441/SR 31 near CR 156 and extends northwesterly on new location. Intersection improvements would be located at Honeysuckle Road. Academy Road, SR 257, Seaboard Coast Railroad, Moore Station Road, Ualke Dairy Road, and Garner Dominy Road. The alignment would then turn northward, intersecting US 80, Airport Road, and Claxton Dairy Road and ending at US 441 near CR 471. The total length of the project is 8.10 miles. The archaeological survey (Level III) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred with by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed corridor as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project would not affect archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
