Abstract

Cultural resources field surveys were completed in November 1994 prior to timber operations for southern pine beetle suppressions. Thus far, two ranger districts have been affected, the Chattooga and Tallulah on the Chattahoochee National Forest. These areas are in Rabun, Habersham, Banks, and Stephens Counties (Figure 1). Currently, there are approximately 20 spots on the Chattooga District, and 26 on the Tallulah District as of this date, more may follow at a later time. Several of these spots have been surveyed previously and are discussed in the project descriptions. Those were not examined again and only one known site was revisited in one SPB spot on the Chattooga District, Compartment 202, and it is a cemetery and will be protected. These surveys are being conducted according to the signed Heritage Resources Plan for 1994 Southern Pine Beetle in agreement with the State Historic Preservation Office and Forest Service. The purpose and need for the action is explained in the Environmental Assessment, and the Heritage Resources Management Plan.
