Abstract

A Phase I survey of approximately 19 miles of US 441 in Coffee County, Georgia was conducted during August of 1994. A systematic inspection of the right of-way using a system of staggered shovel holes placed every 30 meters in area of low site probability and every 10 meters in areas of high probability of site presence was combined with a thorough visual inspection of exposed surfaces. Fifteen archaeological sites and ten isolated finds were recorded none of which are considered eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. All of the sites and isolated finds had been heavily damaged by construction, plowing and other agricultural practices. This report contains a detailed discussion of the prehistory and history of the survey area, a discussion of methods employed, detailed discussions of the identified sites, an evaluation of their National Register eligibility, and recommendations concerning their effect on the construction project.
