Abstract

This report presents the results of a cultural resources sample survey of the proposed Mechanized Infantry Training Area (MITA), Fort Benning, Georgia, undertaken by Gulf South Research Institute and R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc., at the request of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, and the Directorate of Engineering and Housing (DEH), Fort Benning. Initially, a research design for the selection of two sample areas within the project area, and for the assessment of cultural resources within these sample areas, was submitted to the Savannah District. Field investigations were initiated upon the approval of the research design. This report presents the results of these investigations, with assessments of specific research issues outlined in the research design, and recommendations concerning the significance and management of cultural resources within the MITA.
