Abstract

A cultural resources survey was completed for 772 acres in Compartments 2, 4, and 5 on the Hitchiti Experimental Forest. The Hitchiti Experimental Forest is located in Jones County, Georgia approximately 15 miles north of Macon, near the Ocmulgee River. The survey identified 16 cultural sites -- four historic house sites, two historic cemeteries, four prehistoric lithic scatters, one ceramic scatter and five prehistoric isolated finds. Three of the historic house sites, two lithic scatters and the ceramic scatter require protection from further disturbance and testing to determine their eligibility under National Register criteria. One of the lithic scatters, GA08-1250, was actually found on private property, so the Forest Service does not have jurisdiction over this property. Both of the cemeteries are protected under Georgia Laws H.B. 402 and H.B. 457 and the Forest Service Policy on the Treatment of Human Remains.
