Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 requirements for archaeological testing and timely feedback during the planing and development process, the LeConte-Woodmanston Foundation initiated testing of the portion of the property where a proposed pond was scheduled to be built. Testing of the proposed location for the pond has revealed one of the highest concentrations of artifacts in the marsh area where most of the pond would be constructed. The findings of the archaeological testing have led to discussion of the possibility of relocating the pond to an area with few archaeological remains. The foundation members have also discussed the idea of not constructing the pond and obtaining dirt for the reconstruction of rice dams from an offsite location. The testing and discussion of findings of archaeological testing with foundation members has resulted in the protection of an area of the property that needs further testing and mitigation.
