Abstract

An intensive archaeological survey of approximately 360 acres for planned improvements of the James B. Messerly Wastewater Treatment Facility in Augusta, Georgia, was conducted on March 30-31, May 18-19 and 31, and June 1, 1996. The survey located five artifact occurrences and seven sites in the project area, which is comprised of mostly agricultural fields; all of the sites and occurrences were initially observed on the ground surface. None of these cultural resources are considered eligible for the National Register; the significant archeological data has been collected and recorded by this survey and report. All seven sites and artifact occurrences fail to meet the minimum criteria for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, it is recommended that this project may proceed as planned.
