Abstract

Heritage resources surveys and inventories have been completed for 1,039 acres on the Toccoa and Cohutta Ranger Districts, Fannin, Union, Gilmer, and Murray Counties, Georgia. These field surveys were completed during the summer of 1996 by Rebecca E. Bruce, as part of the general Forest Service cultural resources inventory and survey prior to decisions on ground disturbing activities. Portions of the following compartments on the Toccoa Ranger District were examined: 604, 606, 607, 608, 610, 613, 619, 620, 638, 639, 640, 652, 653, and 696 (Table 1). Portions of Compartment 722 were surveyed on the Cohutta. A total of 14 previously unrecorded sites were found. Three sites, all historic house places, are recommended potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, and will be protected from disturbance. The other 11 are determined not eligible and no further work or protection is recommended. These survey and inventory projects were directed towards identifying and recording cultural resource properties, both prehistoric and historic, in compliance with Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended; the USDA Forest Service Southern Region Programmatic Agreement, and the Memorandum of Understanding with the Georgia State Historic Preservation Officer; and NEPA.
