Abstract

R.S. Webb & Associates conducted evaluative testing excavations at Site 9FO250 located in the Silver Creek development site. The Silver Creek development site is located 8.0 kilometers (5.0 miles) southeast of Cumming, Georgia in Forsyth County. Site 9FO250 was detected during a cultural resources survey of the Phase IV-X Silver Creek development site conducted by R.S. Webb & Associates (Gantt and Webb 1996c). The site consists of a large multi-component prehistoric lithic and ceramic scatter covering an area of 410 by 119 meters. Testing confirmed that Site 9FO250 has Early Archaic, Middle Archaic, Late Archaic, Early/Middle Woodland and Late Woodland/Early Mississippian period components. A minor 19th to early 20th century component is also present. Shovel testing and test unit excavations resulted in the identification of two areas where intact archeological deposits are present. Remaining portions of the site have been severely disturbed by cultivation, terracing and silviculture. The intact areas have the potential for addressing research issues pertaining to prehistoric settlement, subsistence and exchange along the main valley of the Chattahoochee River. For this reason, Site 9FO250 is considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Data recovery is the recommended treatment for the intact portions of this site.
