Abstract

An intensive archaeological survey was conducted at the Kings Bay Site, Etowah Park Extension (9CM171K), Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, Georgia. Planned construction of recreational structures and equipment there prompted a recommendation for the survey. Surface reconnaissance, subsurface probing, and excavation of eleven 50x50 cm test pits were completed over an approximate 60x40 meter area in September 1996. Investigations resulted in the recovery of a few prehistoric ceramic fragments throughout the park section, and the location of an irregular, 15x25 meter dense shell midden. The midden exhibited evidence of modern disturbance, and the area around it was quite heavily disturbed, probably from modern earth-moving activities. We recommended that the project area be cleared form further consideration regarding archaeological preservation.
