Abstract

In October of 1996 the proposed Forest-Schatulga Road widening project was surveyed for archeological resources. The two roads are located in the eastern portion of Columbus, Georgia. Road widening is necessary to accommodate increasingly heavy traffic resulting from expansion of the city and suburbs. Total length of the project is 12.2 km (7.6 mi). Four archeological sites and two artifact occurrences were recorded. Three of the sites date to the nineteenth-early twentieth century, and one contains both prehistoric and historic artifacts. Due to previous disturbance or low research potential, none of the sites are considered eligible to the National Register of Historic Places, and no further consideration is warranted.
