Abstract

In January and March 1997, Garrow & Associates, Inc., performed archaeological testing of 10 sites in southeastern Georgia to evaluate their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Sites 9EVIO, 9EV15, 9LI150, 9LG44, and 9LG45 are on Fort Stewart and sites 9CH718, 9CH719, 9CH720, 9CH723, and 9CH724 are on Hunter Army Airfield. With the exception of 9LG44 and 9LG45, the sites had been recommended potentially eligible for the NRHP (Jackson et al. 1988; Smith et al. 1984); sites 9LG44 and 9LG45 had been recommended ineligible for the NRHP (Trinkley et al. 1996). Under a separate contract, archival research also was used to further examine those sites with potentially eligible historic components. This archival research focused on sites 9EV10, 9EV15, 9CH718, 9CH719, 9CH723, and 9CH724. As a result of the current work, all 10 tested sites are recommended ineligible for the NRHP.
