Abstract

This report documents the Phase I survey for archaeological resources for a proposed 1.7 acre substation in Walker County, Georgia. The project tract is situated just south of Chattanooga, Tennessee. This project was performed for the Tennessee Valley Authority. The general project vicinity was the focus of considerable military activity during the Civil War. Extensive engagements occurred just to the east of the project area. The Chickamauga National Military Park, commemorating the Battle of Chickamauga, fought in 1863, is located 2.2 km (1.3 miles) east of the current project area. A literature search indicated no major activities in the immediate vicinity of the project area. Screened shovel tests at 30 meter intervals and metal detector survey were undertaken. No archaeological sites were located in the project area.
