Archaeological Survey of Five Proposed Bridge Replacement Sites, Jasper County, Georgia

Abstract

Department of Transportation Project PFH-50(l), Jasper County, proposes to replace five wooden plank bridges on County Road 141/River Four of the f ive proposed bridge replacement sites are located partially or completely on U.S.D.A. Oconee National Forest property. An archeological survey by GDOT staff archaeologists was conducted within the area of potential effect for each of the five proposed replacement sites. The survey was conducted in compliance with section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and subsequent amendments; with the goal of locating, identifying and evaluating archaeological resources within the project's area of potential effect in terms of eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Two archeological sites were located during the course of the survey. 318 consists of a prehistoric lithic scatter and is recommended eligible for the National Register. Site 9JA319 represents a prehistoric lithic scatter and a nineteenth century mill complex and associated historic settlement. This site is recommended eligible for inclusion on in the National Register under criteria a and d for its association with events that have made a significant contribution to Georgia's history and for the important information it may contain relating to historic mill operations and nineteenth century lifeways.
