Abstract

A cultural resources survey was conducted for archeological and historic resources on a 5.9 acre tract proposed for development. A marina is to be constructed at the Sandy Run, Holiday Shores Subdivision, Hancock County, Georgia. The proposed marina, located on the shores of Sandy Run Creek and Lake Sinclair/Oconee River, would be permitted by the Georgia Power Company and Hancock County (Code Enforcement). The purpose of this survey was to determine the effect of the proposed marina development on cultural resources listed on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The pedestrian survey with limited shovel testing was conducted on August 14, 1997, by the author and Lee A. Nabergall-Luis. A surface check of the project area failed to locate a known prehistoric site (9Hk102), but resulted in the recording of a previously unknown site, 9Hk187. Site 9Hk102, a Late Archaic and Woodland artifact scatter, was previously recommended ineligible for the National Register; site 9Hk187, and Early Archaic lithic scatter, is also recommended ineligible for the National Register.
