Abstract

This report summarizes a cultural resources survey of Oglethorpe Power Corporation's (OPC) proposed Pony Express substation in southeastern Newton County. The 0.93 ha (2.3 ac) project area is about 300 m north of the community of Pony Express, which is located at the intersection of State Routes 11 and 142. The survey was undertaken to ensure that OPC is in compliance with federal regulations governing the disposition of cultural resources (archeological and historic sites). The survey included a background and literature search, and the excavation of 12 shovel tests, all of which were culturally sterile. No cultural resources are present in the project area. Therefore, substation construction will not affect any archeological or historical sites.
