Abstract

The intensive cultural resources survey of nearly 6.1 sq km (1515 ac) of Fort Gordon located 22 archeological sites and 15 artifact occurrences. The survey examined all or portions of Training Areas 7, 23, 28, 30, the Cantonment Area, and the area around Butler Dam which was weakened by flood waters. Subsurface testing demonstrated that relatively intact artifact deposits are present on five sites (9RI122, 365, 366, 374 and 376) and additional study can make important contributions to the archeology of the region. Consequently, these sites are recommended eligible to the National Register of Historic Places at the local level of significance. Fort Gordon should take the necessary steps to protect these sites from damage by avoiding the resources.
