Abstract

At the request of Mr. Milburn Posten of the Trayton Corporation, I inspected the cemetery on the Bobe tract on July 13, 1992 in my capacity as a professional archeologist familiar with delineating old cemeteries. Our firm has delineated, investigated and/or excavated nine cemeteries in Georgia and South Carolina in the past seven years; I have been directly involved in four of these (Curry cemetery in Edgefield, SC; Deepstep AME cemetery in Deepstep, GA; Philadelphia Church cemetery in Harlem, GA; and an unknown church cemetery in Lincoln County, GA). All of these were old abandoned cemeteries in wooded conditions. I also was active in the formulation of recent state legislation dealing with abandoned cemeteries, and so am familiar with some legal aspects of cemetery delineation.

The goal of the project was simply to define the outer limits of the cemetery, with special attention paid to the southern limit, where Trayton Corporation would like to place an access road to the eastern portion of the large tract.
