Abstract

On February 6, 1998, New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey for the widening and improvements to Jeffersonville Road, Macon, Bibb County, Georgia. The project corridor is located along the north side of Jeffersonville Road from the Emery Highway and Jeffersonville Road intersection to Magnolia Drive, then continues along both sides of Jeffersonville Road to Walnut Creek. The proposed project will widen Jeffersonville Road from two 3.6 meter (12 foot) lanes to four 3.6 meter (12 foot) lanes, therefore the survey area consisted of a 30 meter (100 foot) right-of-way. The total project length is approximately 1.09 kilometers (0.68 mile). This report provides a prehistoric and historic background for the area and completely chronicles the results of the archaeological survey. Field coverage of the proposed right-of-way widening consisted of transect survey. A pedestrian survey of the corridor utilized alternate 30 meter (100 foot) shovel test intervals along single transects as well as visual inspection of the exposed ground surface. No archaeological sites were identified within the areas of possible impact, therefore no further archaeological work is recommended in this area.
