Abstract

Between October 29, 1997 and November 3, 1997, a two person crew from New South Associates, Inc. surveyed a 55 acre area designated for new housing on the Fort Stewart military base, located on the coastal plain of Georgia. On the basis of previous archaeological research within the Fort Stewart area, only ephemeral prehistoric camps and late nineteenth/ early twentieth century sites were expected within the gently sloping project area. The systematic archaeological survey of the project area included 233 shovel tests and an intensive surface inspection. Five soil groups were identified, of which three were likely candidates for yielding sites. However, apart from remnants of fairly recent turpentine harvesting areas, an army training field camp, and a modern trash dump, the project area yielded no signs of significant archaeological sites typically considered National Register eligible or potentially-eligible.
