Abstract

During February 1998, a cultural resource assessment survey was conducted by Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI) of a tract associated with the proposed Maple Hill Landfill in Dougherty County, Georgia. The cultural resource assessment included a pedestrian inspection of the project area combined with systematic shovel testing at 30 meter intervals. A total of 154 shovel tests was excavated within the approximately 200 acre study area. Fieldwork resulted in the recording of four archaeological sites within the project area, 9DU110, 9DU111, 9DU112, 9DU113. Based on a high degree of disturbance resulting from plowing and erosion, none of these sites is potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Additional investigation or preservation of these four sites is not warranted, and it is recommended that the proposed project be allowed to proceed.
