Abstract

On June 6, 2000 an archeological survey was conducted within the area of potential effect for a proposed reconstruction of the existing intersection of Mayfield Road and Bethany Road, in north Fulton County. The two-laved, simple crossroads intersection will be widened to add a turn lane, bike lane and a sidewalk. Most of this new construction will occur within existing 18 m (60 ft) rights-of-way, but close to the intersection the right-of-way tapers outward and expands to 22 m (76 ft). The area of potential effect consists of between 0 and 2 m of new right-of-way on both sides of both roads, extending for a distance of about 122 m in each of the four directions. The survey confirmed that the most of the proposed improvements are within the existing rights-of-way of Mayfield and Bethany Roads, which have been disturbed by ditching and grading. Archival research showed that no archeological or house sites occurred in the project area. Field inspection and shovel testing failed to recover any evidence of prehistoric or historic sites in the project area. Shovel testing revealed that most of the ungraded portion of the project area consists of a shallow plowzone. No archeological sites exist within the proposed project's boundaries. Therefore, construction will not adversely impact any significant cultural resources and the project should be allowed to proceed.
