Abstract

The Coastal Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GDNR) plans to construct a fishing pier and boat service dock adjacent to the city park on the north side of the St. Mary's River at St. Mary's, Georgia. In order to comply with state and federal cultural resource management requirements, the GDNR determined that an underwater remote sensing survey would be necessary to identify potentially significant submerged cultural resources in the project area that could be disturbed by dredging or facility construction. That survey was carried out by Tidewater Atlantic Research, Inc., (TAR) of Washington, North Carolina in accordance with the provisions of a contract with the GDNR. Seven magnetic and/or acoustic anomalies were identified within the project area during the remote sensing survey. Analysis of the collected data revealed that none of those anomalies exhibited signature characteristics suggestive of potentially submerged cultural resources. All of the anomalies appear to have been generated by cable, pipe or debris associated with existing dock and pier structures. As none of the targets represent shipwrecks and other potentially significant submerged cultural resources, no additional investigation of the area is recommended in conjunction with the current project. Based on the remote sensing survey, the proposed project will not impact any National Register of Historic Places eligible submerged cultural resources.
