Abstract

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) wishes to replace a structurally deficient bridge on Fincherville Road over Tussahaw Creek north of Jackson in northern in Butts County (Figure 1). This bridge will be replaced in its existing location and traffic will be re-routed off-site. Southeastern Archeological Services (SAS) conducted an intensive archeological survey of the project area to ensure compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. This act stipulates that federal agencies--in this case the Federal Highway Administration--take into account an undertaking's potential adverse effects to significant cultural resources. The goals of the survey were to locate, delineate, describe, and evaluate (in terms of eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places) archeological sites in the project's area of potential effect. The field survey was conducted on August 8, 2001 by staff archeologists Ron Schoettmer and Trent Meyers.
