Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. conducted an intensive archaeological survey for the proposed bridge replacement at CR 842/Old Harris Road over the Southern Railroad (Figure 1; Photograph 1). This work was conducted on behalf of the Georgia Department of Transportation under contract with Parsons, Brinckerhoff, Quade, and Douglas, Inc., an engineering firm in Atlanta. Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, requires that the Federal Highway Administration (or other federal agencies) take into account potential adverse effects to significant historic properties within the area of potential effect (APE). The purpose of the project was to locate archaeological resources within the APE and assess their National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility status.
