The survey reported here was designed to locate archeological sites in the area of potential effect of a bridge replacement project proposed by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). An attempt to evaluate located resources' eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) was also made, to the extent possible from shovel testing within the project's narrow corridor. The survey located two prehistoric archeological sites in the project area, both sparse lithic scatters limited to a plowzone. The portions of the two sites within the project's area of potential effect were shovel tested on 10 and 20 m intervals. Based on these samples, we conclude that the portions of the sites within the area of potential effect lack archeological research potential. We recommend that these portions do not contribute to eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. However, the eligibility of the sites on whole, which include sizable portions beyond the area of potential effect that were not intensively investigated, remains unknown. Given this assessment, Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. recommends that the proposed bridge replacement project will have no adverse effect upon significant archeological resources.
