Abstract

On February 12, 2001, staff archaeologists from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) conducted an archaeological survey of CR 82 in Treutlen County, Georgia. More specifically, GDOT project PR-82(283) would grade, drain, base, and surface CR 82. The existing CR 82 roadway within the project corridor consists of a graded improved dirt road with a variable 16 to 20 foot travel surface. The survey was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, and the Georgia Environmental Policy Act of 1991. The goals of the survey were to locate, document, and assess archaeological resources which may be eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the Georgia Register of Historic Places (GRHP) located within the proposed project's area of potential effect (APE). Two archaeological resources, 9TU23 and 9TU24, were identified partially within the project area. The portion of these sites that are contained within the proposed project's APE are highly disturbed, and do not contribute to the eligibility of either site as a whole. Due to the apparent size of the sites outside of the project's APE, no definitive NRHP/GRHP assessment or site size could be undertaken. It is possible that intact deposits or features may be located elsewhere within the limits of the sites. For this reason the NRHP/GRHP status of these sites remains unknown. However, further evaluation within the proposed project's APE would yield no additional information beyond the present level of investigation. Therefore, it is concluded that implementation of GDOT project PR-82(283), Treutlen County, will not affect archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion on the NRHP or the GRHP, provided that the project conforms to the present design concept.
