Abstract

This report presents the results of an archeological survey of the area of potential effect of abridge replacement project proposed by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The bridge is located on State Route 36 at its crossing of Buck Creek in northern Lamar County. The purpose of the survey was to locate any archeological resources within the area of potential effect and, to the extent possible, evaluate the significance of the resources. Significance was defined on the basis of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. The survey located one prehistoric archeological site and one artifact occurrence in the project area. Site 9LR31, which consists of a prehistoric lithic scatter, was tested on 10 and 20 m intervals. Based on these samples, we conclude that the portions of this site within the area of potential effect lack archeological research potential. We recommend that these portions are not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. However, the eligibility of the site as a whole, which includes sizable portions beyond the area of potential effect that were not intensively investigated, remains unknown. Given this assessment, we recommend that the proposed bridge replacement project will have no adverse effect upon significant archeological resources.
