The survey described here was designed to locate and evaluate archeological sites in the area of a bridge replacement project proposed by the Georgia Department of Transportation near West Point, Georgia. The bridge to be replaced passes over Flat Shoals Creek on SR 103 about 1.6 km (a mile) south of its intersections with SR 18 and Interstate Highway 85. Archival and field research revealed two archeological sites (9HS333 and 9HS334) partly within in the project APE, both represented by historic era artifact scatters. Each appears to be the product of late nineteenth or early twentieth century habitation. Neither are represented within the APE by standing structures, cultural features, or significant archeological deposits. The few artifacts that were recovered from within the APE at site 9HS333 occurred in an eroded, graded, severely disturbed context. The few artifacts recovered from site 9HS334 within the APE occurred in a moderately eroded context. In short, neither site segment contains deposits that would provide new and informative interpretations of the period in which they were produced. As a result, the project is expected to have no effect upon significant archeological resources. Notwithstanding other considerations, we recommend the project be allowed to proceed as planned.
