Abstract

The Fickling Company of Macon, Georgia contracted with Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. (Southern Research) to perform a Phase One Archaeological Survey of a 40-acre tract of land located approximately 8 miles northwest of downtown Macon in Bibb County, Georgia (Figure 1). The property, referred to as the Lullwater at Bass Site, is adjacent to Interstate 75 and is two miles west of the Ocmulgee River. Beaverdam Creek runs along the southern boundary of the tract. The development will consist of apartment complexes.

The Area of Potential Effect (APE) was considered to be the entire 40-acre tract (Figure 2). The purpose of the investigation was to identify archaeological resources within the project area and to evaluate the eligibility of the identified resources for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).

As a result of the survey, one archaeological site was identified within the project area, a prehistoric artifact scatter occupied during the Middle or Late Archaic and Woodland/Mississippian periods.
