Addendum: Archaeological Reconnaissance Survey of the Augusta Canal Headgates Area, Columbia County, Georgia

Abstract

At the request of the Augusta Canal Authority, archaeologists from Southern Research conducted an archaeological investigation of the Augusta Canal Headgates National Heritage Area from August 11 through August 20, 2003. This work was conducted in advance of construction of sewer lines, a canoe storage building, a canoe dock, and a pedestrian footbridge. This report details the results of shovel testing, test units, and pedestrian surveys conducted during that time. Based on the relative dearth of cultural deposits no adverse effect is expected for all of the proposed improvements. The investigation reported here was performed in addendum to the work conducted in the Headgates area in 2000 (Cowie et al. 2000).
