The survey described here was designed to locate and evaluate archeological sites in the area of two bridge replacement projects proposed by the Georgia Department of Transportation. Both of the proposed projects are along State Route (SR) 73 /US 301 in south-central Screven County, where the highway crosses Ogeechee Creek and the South Fork of Ogeechee Creek ("South Fork'). Three archeological sites were located during the course of survey, one site (9SN209) near the Ogeechee Creek crossing and two sites (9SN210 and 9SN211) near the South Fork crossing. Of these three sites, only site 9SN211 has the potential to contain significant archeological deposits, in the small segment of the site west of SR 73 /US 301. The segment of site 9SN211 west of SR 73/ US 301 may contain significant archeological deposits, but the site portion within the APE (east of the highway) does not contain any evidence of significant deposits. Due to changes made in the proposed South Fork APE to avoid taking of new right-of-way west of SR 73/ US 301, we recommend that there will be no adverse effect to significant archeological deposits as a result of the proposed project.
