Abstract

In 2003, Prentice Thomas and Associates, Inc. was awarded Contract No. C5890020159 to provide test and evaluation services to support the cultural resources management program at Fort Stewart Military Reservation and Hunter Army Airfield. The first delivery order was issued in the fall of that year, and called for the testing of 28 sites in Bryan, Liberty and Long counties, Georgia. The sites are 9BN75, 9LG213, 9LG234, 9LI259, 9LI267, 9LI278, 9LI317, 9LI450, 9LI506, 9LI544, 9LI556, 9LI578, 9LI580, 9LI581, 9LI585, 9LI593, 9LI618, 9LI705, 9LI721, 9LI741, 9LI763, 9LI774, 9LI778, 9LI785, 9LI786, 9LI868, 9LI973 and 9LI1026. The sites were tested through a combination of field approaches, which included reconnaissance, metal detection, surface collection, shovel testing and test pit excavation. Historic research was undertaken at those sites for which this effort was tasked, although general information on other sites was gleaned during the course of the background and archival source review. The sites span a broad period in prehistory, from the Early Archaic through the Mississippian era. One Historic Indian component was identified among the sites, and there was evidence of other historic occupation from the Georgia Colonial period through the current period of military proprietorship. Twenty-one sites have been evaluated as eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places: 9BN75, 9LG213, 9LG234, 9LI259, 9LI267, 9LI278, 9LI317, 9LI578, 9LI580, 9LI581, 9LI585, 9LI593, 9LI618, 9LI721, 9LI741, 9LI763, 9LI774, 9LI785, 9LI786, 9LI868 and 9LI973. One site, 9LI705, contains prehistoric and historic remains, the latter of which cannot be fully evaluated at this time because none of the testing effort was tasked to investigate this component. The remaining six sites are ineligible for nomination.
