Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of Howard Road in Wayne County Georgia from May 19 through 23, 2004. The parameters for the archaeological study consisted of pedestrian survey of the corridor, which is 2.7 miles in length and includes 80 feet of right-of-way. The project corridor extends between the intersection of Howard Road and U.S. 341 and Howard Road and Skeeter Drive. Several previously recorded archaeological sites: 9Wy6, 9Wy10, 9Wy31, 9Wy33, 9Wy34; and one cultural resource survey, are located within a one-mile (1.60 km) radius of the study areas. One site, 9Wy33 is located in the project corridor at the intersection of Howard Road and U.S. 341. This site is the location of the historic town of Mount Pleasant. Two previously unrecorded archaeological sites, 9Wy49 and 9Wy5O were discovered within the project corridor. Site 9Wy49 is a historic home site dating between the late nineteenth and early to middle twentieth century and Site 9Wy50 is a historic artifact scatter dating between early the early nineteenth and middle twentieth century. Neither of these sites is recommended as eligible for listing on the NRHP and no additional archaeological study of the project corridor is recommended.
