Abstract

In late August 2004, Greenhouse Consultants Incorporated began a Phase I Archaeological Survey for proposed widening and reconstruction of existing portions of Big Shanty Road and construction of the Big Shanty Road Connector in Cobb County, Georgia. The survey was under contract to Mayes, Sudderth & Etheredge, Inc. on behalf of the Georgia Department of Transportation. The purpose of the study was to inventory any archaeological resources in the proposed construction right-of-way and to make recommendations for further evaluation in accordance with the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria of significance (36 CFR Part 60.4). A field survey was designed to locate subsurface or exposed archaeological deposits. The survey was conducted using a combination of shovel test pit and surface inspection techniques. One archaeological site (9C0669) was discovered in the process. Site 9CO669 is a Woodland period site located between Town Point Drive and Barrett Lakes Boulevard. The site contains intact soils and in our view harbors further research potential. For these reasons we recommended it as potentially eligible for the NRHP. In response, Mayes, Sudderth & Etheredge, Inc. shifted the proposed project corridor alignment, and reduced the width of the ROW to avoid the site. As a result of the new alignment, there are no potentially eligible sites within the area of potential effects.
