Abstract

Under a continuing services contract with the U.S. Army Infantry Center, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division, Fort Benning Military Reservation, Panamerican Consultants, Inc. (PCI) conducted an intensive archaeological survey of 3,688 acres of Training Areas A 13, A 15, A 16, and A 17 at Fort Benning, Georgia. This work was undertaken in compliance with Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1996. A total of 128 archaeological loci (90 sites and 38 isolated finds) were identified during this project. Twenty-one of the loci (9CE2330, 9CE2357, 9CE2369, 9CE2373, 9CE2375, 9CE2392, 9CE2401, 9CE2402, 9CE2403, 9CE2409, 9CE2411, 9CE2414, 9CE2418, 9CE2420, 9CE2431, 9CE2433, 9CE2434, 9CE2447, 9CE2448, 9CE2449, and 9CE2459) were recommended as indeterminate for inclusion in the NRHP. In addition to these loci, a historic cemetery was recorded (9CE2356) within Training Area A 15. Though cemeteries are not eligible for NRHP inclusion, state and federal laws protect them, thus this cemetery should be avoided. The remaining loci were deemed ineligible. Protective measures are recommended for the indeterminate loci.
